Our story

It started with a chest freezer and a clipboard.

In 1998 a group of nine neighbors pooled money for a chest freezer in the back of Second Street Church and started writing down who on the block needed what. That list is still the way we work, just with a bigger building and better record keeping.

Today the alliance runs four programs and employs six people, five of whom grew up within a mile of the pantry. Everyone else here is a volunteer. We stay deliberately small so the answer to "who is my contact?" is always a name and a phone number.

“We are not a charity from somewhere else. We are the people who live here.”

Six blocks

Everything we run is inside that walk.

In their words

The people who make the block work.

“I came in for a box of groceries the first time. Now I run the produce table on Saturdays. That is what this place does, it hands you something to do as well as something to carry home.”

GLGloria L.Pantry volunteer since 2019

“We send families here because the people actually follow up. They answer the phone, they help with the forms, and nobody gets treated like a case number.”

PRPastor RuizPartner, Second Street Church

“My son reads out loud to me now. He is nine. Six months ago he would not read to anyone. I did not expect a free program to change that.”

Good to know

Questions we get at the front desk.

Do I need to qualify for the food pantry?

No. We do not ask for income, ID or immigration status. Come on Saturday between 8am and noon, take what you need, and come back next week.

Where does the money actually go?

Eighty-four cents of every dollar buys food and program supplies. Eleven cents keeps the building open, five cents covers insurance and the annual audit. Our 990 is posted each year and we will mail a copy on request.

Can I volunteer if I only have a couple hours a month?

Yes, and that is most of our volunteers. Shifts run two hours. Saturday pantry sorting, Tuesday tutoring, or a Saturday morning in the garden. We will train you the first time you come.

Do you accept clothing or furniture donations?

We take clothing in season, nothing stained or torn. We cannot store furniture. If you have furniture, call us and we will connect you with a family who is moving into a place.

Still not sure? Call (713) 555-0119 and ask for Dolores. If she is out, someone on staff will call you back the same day.
